Alanya was founded on a small peninsula with the Taurus Mountains to the north and the Mediterranean to the south. In ancient times, it was sometimes called Pamphylia and sometimes Cilicia because it was located on the line between Pamphylia and Cilicia.
The oldest known name of the city is Korakesium. During the Byzantine period, it was called Kalanoros. In the 13th century, when the Anatolian Seljuk rulers, Alaaddin Keykubat I (1200-1237), conquered the castle, the city changed its name to Alaiye.
Alanya, together with Tarsus, was connected to the province of Cyprus in 1571, and became a sanjak of the province of Konya in 1864. It was connected to Antalya in 1868, and became a district of this province in 1871.
The population of Alanya, a district completely located within the province of Antalya, reached 410,503 in January 2025.
Alanya Castle: This old castle sits high on a big cliff. From there, you can see amazing sights of the whole city and the Mediterranean Sea. Walk along its old walls, climb up the towers, and see the Red Tower, which is a very special place.
Kleopatra Beach: People say that Cleopatra herself swam in the water at this beautiful beach. It's famous for its soft, golden sand and the water is so clear. You can relax, sunbathe, or try some fun water sports.
Dim Cave: Go inside this big cave system. It's full of interesting shapes like stalactites (that hang down) and stalagmites (that grow up from the ground). The air inside is cool and refreshing, which is nice when it's hot in the summer.
Damlatas Cave: This cave was found by accident when people were building something. It's known for its special air, which some people believe is good for their breathing. Explore its unique shapes and enjoy the peaceful feeling inside.
