Antalya has been a favorite of Russian tourists and for many years. However, in recent years, the number of Russians permanently residing in Antalya has increased. Today there are Russian schools, churches and many Russian employers in the city.
The Russian community living in Antalya is well-established and dynamic. While there has been both emigration and re-emigration, the city's Russian community still maintains a significant presence.
Some Russians have become Turkish citizens, previously granted citizenship by purchasing property worth $250,000, and more recently, $400,000. Many Russians living in Antalya are also involved in trade and contribute directly to the city's economy.
Russians began migrating to Turkey during the first half of the 1990s. Most had fled the economic problems prevalent after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. During this period, many intermarried and assimilated with locals, bringing a rapid increase in mixed marriages. There is a Russian Association of Education, Culture and Cooperation, which aims to expand Russian language and culture in Turkey as well as promote the interests of the community.
Note: Following the 2022 war, many Russians have fled to Turkey after Vladimir Putin announced a "partial mobilization", around 50,000 Russians had moved to Antalya by September 2022, as well as 18,000 Ukrainians.
